Alarming Statistics about Children’s Reading Levels

If you’re reading this post, it’s likely that by the time you reached the end of third grade, you had already embarked on your journey into the world of reading. Did you know that this crucial period is when young learners should master the skill of reading? As they step into the fourth grade, students transition from learning how to read to using reading as a tool to explore and understand the world around them. Reading becomes the cornerstone of all subjects, including the intricacies of math, laying a solid foundation for lifelong learning and discovery.

According to NAEP*, the percentage of fourth-grade public school students performing at or above the NAEP Proficient level in reading was 30 percent nationally in 2024, down two percentage points from 2022.  NAEP achievement levels are performance standards that describe what students should know and be able to do.
